Why A Luxury Chinese Watchmaker Has Only Sold Two $273,000 Watches In Three Years

$
0

seagull watch china brand

Talk about lost opportunity.

China has one of the fastest growing luxury markets in the world, but upscale Chinese brands can’t seem to get a foothold.

Tianjin-based watchmaker Seagull, for example, has sold only two of its ¥1.7 million (about $273,000) watches (link in Chinese) in the past three years.

Chinese consumers account for half of all luxury purchases in Asia and almost one third in Europe, according to consultancy firm Bain. One in four personal luxury good purchases worldwide is made by a Chinese person, the firm calculates. In the next five years China could become the biggest consumer market for luxury goods.

Still, there is no premium Chinese brand that can compete with European rivals like Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and Chanel—some of the staples for upper-crust mainlanders. Chinese research group Hurun’s list of the best luxury brands in 2012 listed only two domestic companies, Moutai and Wuliangyu—both high-end baijiu (grain liquor) brands. The majority of Chinese even say they would pay more for products made in the US.

The Chinese government doesn’t want foreign companies to dominate high-end consumer goods and is keeping tariffs on foreign luxury items. But that hasn’t helped the local brands compete. Rich Chinese simply shop abroad, where the same items often cost half as much.

The basic problem is that, except on a uniquely Chinese product like baijiu, nothing signals quality and—above all—status like a foreign label. Still, there might be some chance for local luxe goods players. As we’ve written before, younger Chinese shoppers are starting to care less about prestige and more about having things that are unique and express something about themselves. Consulting firm A.T. Kearney writes, “The turning point… will be the influence of a new Chinese generation—those born in the 1980s and later who have more exposure to better-quality Chinese products and will prove more confident about purchasing them.”

Ex-Lehman Execs Unload Their 15 Central Park West Apartment For $32.5 Million

$44 million 15 central park west apartment

A deal for a four-bedroom apartment at 15 Central Park West has closed for $32.5 million, a 92 percent mark up over its last sales price, The Real Deal has learned.

The unit, owned by former Lehman Brothers executives Arthur and Evelyne Estey, was listed by Kyle Blackmon of Brown Harris Stevens for $36 million.

Tamir Shemesh of the Corcoran Group represented the buyer in the deal, a source said.

Neither Blackmon nor Shemesh immediately responded to a request for comment. An email to Arthur Estey went unreturned.

As The Real Deal previously reported, the unit, which is one of the largest non-penthouse residences in the building, totals 4,584 square feet and is on the seventh floor.

It was listed in June by Blackmon, who also lives in the Zeckendorf-developed tower. The couple bought the unit for $16.9 million in 2007, public records show.

The Esteys have moved on since their Lehman days. Arthur Estey established his maiden hedge fund in 2009; Evelyn recently took a position as chief financial officer and chief operating officer of a French-language school, Lycée Français de New York, on the Upper East Side.

The identity of the buyer was not immediately clear.

How To Send A Woman A Drink At The Bar Like A Gentleman

$
0
0

martini, alcohol, drinking, cocktail

You're out. You're having a blast and you just caught a glance from that pretty little something down the bar.

What do you do next? Be the gentleman that you are and send her a drink.

This isn’t as easy as it sounds, though. You’re aiming for suave, not sleazy. But if you play your cards right, you’ll be able to make a big impression with your gentlemanly style and confidence.

Use the bartender as your wingman

To pull this off correctly, it’s essential to get the bartender on your side. Make sure to treat him with respect and not like a lackey. After all, his delivery will go a long way to determining how the woman is going to react. If his body language says you’re a jerk, it doesn’t matter what words he uses when he brings the drink over to her. When sending women drinks, the bartender is your wingman and in order to make him a helpful and willing one, you should be nice and tip big.

Ask what she’s drinking

You can’t just order any old drink and send it over to her. You should ask the bartender what she’s drinking and send another of the same to her when it looks like her drink is getting a little low (but before she orders a fresh one). If you end up choosing something she doesn’t like, you’ll have wasted a drink and won't get the reaction you desire.

Play it safe and send her something you know will please her taste buds. Another way of doing this is to ask the bartender to charge you for whatever drink she orders next. When he hands it to her he can gesture in your direction, indicating that it’s on you.

The casual nod

As the bartender takes the drink over, keep your eyes on the woman. When he points you out to her, put on a genuine smile and give a casual nod. You could also slightly raise your glass toward her. Don’t jump up and down or wave at her like a lunatic. You don’t have to act overly eager. Just keep it cool and sincere.

Observe her reaction

The next step is to watch her reaction to see whether or not you should make your way over to introduce yourself. If she returns your smile and waves, you’ve got a green light. If she turns to her friends and giggles, give it some time to figure out whether she’s laughing at you or expressing her delight to the girls. Anything along the lines of eye-rolling, nose-upturning or refusing the drink is obviously a bad sign. In that case, shrug it off.

Introduce yourself

Give her a chance to enjoy her drink. Then, if her reaction is favorable, approach her and start up a conversation. You shouldn’t act cocky or assume anything just because she accepted your drink. You have created yourself an in to start things off with her, but don’t take it for granted. You still have to use your wit and charm to make a good impression. A proper follow-up is key when it comes to sending women drinks.

the ice is broken

Sending a woman a drink is a classic move that many women will appreciate. It’s an old-school gentlemanly move (you know Clooneywould approve) that doesn’t get used too much these days, and therefore has some novelty appeal. If you feel like taking a more direct approach, you could just go up and talk to her, but sending over a cocktail first will make her feel special and show her that you’re a generous guy. Sending a drink over will definitely provide you with an easy icebreaker.

From there, it’s up to you to form a connection and get her interested in you.

Top 10 Luxury Travel Trends & Predictions for 2013

$
0
0

From the local-on-arrival revolution to concierge apps and spa pampering for guys, Mr & Mrs Smith predicts 10 of the top boutique hotel and luxury travel trends to look out for in 2013.

1: Hyper-local experiences: rediscovering inner-city ‘villages’
Last year, we reported on the rise of international experience seekers, from Bali to Thailand, using boutique hotel bases to tap into regional culture, activities and community programmes. Wherever we go we want to live like a local, and the movement has now come full circle, with travellers rediscovering inner-city ‘villages’ in flagship cities from Berlin (Mitte) to New York (Brooklyn) and London (East London). The success of homes-for-hire website Airbnb, and sites such as Plus One Berlin, Nectar & Pulse and Valet, which pair visitors up with inspiring locals, ‘soul mates’ or travel experts, are proof that we’re increasingly looking for hosts in the know, insider tips and authentic neighbourhood immersion, with wise hotels quick to deliver the same. Extending the trend, forward-looking properties are hosting covetable local boutiques in-house: in New York the Library Lounge at The NoMad Hotel stocks rare tomes custom-curated by US bookstore Juniper Books. Singapore’s New Majestic Hotel offers selected local souvenirs and BooksActually tomes care of the Space Program, part-museum, part-store and part-installation located in the lobby. Budapest’s Brody House draws in a creative local crowd, with art events and readings.

2: Effortless living
We’ve spotted a trend for easy living, with hospitable havens such as newly launched Ovolo Hotel Melbourne ensuring minibar contents, WiFi, breakfast-to-go and other essentials (such as Apple TV) are automatically included in rates. It’s a simple fix, but one we expect to become the norm, as time-poor travellers seek out stress-free stays. Also in Melbourne, The Cullen hotel pioneered a radical approach to checking out this January, offering guests the chance to stay another night for free if no one else was checking in. Dubbed ‘the world’s latest check-out’, it’s a sign of game-changing things to come. Shake up the basics with style, and you’ve got our attention.

3: Heritage-modern havens
Rolling into 2013, the hottest design trend for boutique hotels is the rise of the heritage-modern hybrid, mingling original architecture and striking new spaces. Sigh-inducing examples include interiors whizz Bill Bensley’s recent projects, such as Angkor-inspired Shinta Mani in Siem Reap, art deco-influenced The Siam on Bangkok’s riverside and Phuket’s tin mine-channeling Indigo Pearl. Jacques Garcia’s The NoMad Hotel in New York teams a beaux arts heritage building with fashionable journey-themed touches. Minimal, contemporary Hotel Vestibul Palace in Split, Croatia, was converted from three Roman palaces. Hand-crafted furniture, antiques and vintage accessories – from retro suitcases and posters to old-fashioned gramophones – add old spice to the mix, taking us back to the future. Clashing patterns, prints and textures also pay homage to catwalk fashions.

4: Fashion-forward food
Canny hotels have sussed that gourmet getaways attract a style-savvy crowd (with guests’ Twitter pics of dishes doubling as PR). Graphic bento box breakfasts are all the rage, as sampled at Austin’s Hotel San José and South Australia’s The Australasian Circa 1858. We also can’t get enough of barista-brewed coffee and global tea; Costa Rican eco-inn Finca Rosa Blanca offers sustainable coffee plantation tours, coffee classes and coffee body-scrubs. Shanghai’s The Puli Hotel & Spa harnesses the restorative power of tea for wraps, scrubs and beauty packages. Sri Lanka’s colonial Ceylon Tea Trails boasts tea-infused cuisine, tastings and visits to the local tea factory with a resident tea planter. Vintage cocktails are making a comeback (thanks Hotel Muse, Bangkok), but the most surprising food trend? The reinvention of the once-dreaded hotel buffet, care of hip new stays QT Port Douglas and QT Gold Coast. Dubbed Bazaar, their interactive produce markets team help-yourself local meats, cheese, seafood and organic salads with cooked-to-order dishes whipped up live at food stations and delivered to your table.

5: Suits you, Sir: spa and sporty treats for men
Hotel spas are increasingly catering to guy grooming, with treatments tailored around male tastes and time. At new hotel QT Sydney gents can enjoy no-nonsense pampering – classic wet shaves and facials – at the old-school barber’s. At The Balé in Bali, there’s a 90-minute coffee ritual for men. Also appealing to the boys, the tattooist at Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort & Spa makes a change from the usual mani/pedi spa offerings, with cutting-edge Polynesian skin art the ultimate holiday souvenir. Stays are getting more sporty, too: Ovolo Hotel Melbourne’s Terrace Suite is fitted out with a punchbag; Bangkok’s The Siam boasts the world’s first muay Thai kickboxing ring in a hotel; Motu Teta in French Polynesia offers outrigger-canoeing and spearfishing; the Hamptons’ The Surf Lodge caters for waveriders; and Hayman on the Great Barrier Reef tempts with heli-golf. On the decor front, London’s Dorset Square Hotel bowls guests over with a cricket theme.

6: Meet the concierge app: iPads, mobiles and more
In these fast-moving digital times, it’s no surprise that the concierge has gone high-tech. At trendsetting QT Sydney guests download the QT Concierge app, compatible with iPhones and most mobiles, once they’ve booked a room. Cue hot tips on everything from in-house spa treatments to the best local spots to shop, drink, eat and play. Similarly, The Islington Hotel in Hobart offers iPads in rooms with a tour guide app to the hotel and its covetable art collection. Hotel bookings (and browsing) on mobile phones and iPads are also huge as we plan our trips on the go. Conversely, web-enabled smart TVs mean we can snap up stays recommended on our favourite travel shows without even leaving the couch.

7: The high life
Hotels can’t get enough of the high life, and neither can we. High-rise socialising and sipping is on the up (pardon the pun), partly thanks to tight architectural footprints in prime urban locations. New York newcomers head up the vogue, with a view-blessed bar at skyscraping scenester The James New York and minimally mod rooftop pool and bar at Hôtel Americano – perhaps inspired by The Standard High Line’s lofty example, lording it over the High Line elevated park. Bangkok’s Hotel Muse offers Prohibition-inspired rooftop bar Speakeasy for sinking sundowners; Hansar Bangkok totes cantilevered beds in its Vertigo Suites plus a skyline-scoping pool. Even low-rise Bali seduces with sexy rooftop spaces at Anantara Seminyak and L Hotel Seminyak. On a foodie tip, London’s Rough Luxe hotel is home to some rooftop beehives, raided for breakfast honey.

8: Boutique family breaks
Increasingly, boutique and luxury hotels are catering to family stays, too, aware that their original chic-couple customers are growing up and may now have children in tow. We’re not talking grim kids’ clubs and swimming pools overrun by sprogs, though; the best family-friendly retreats, such as Fiji’s Vomo Island Resort, seamlessly integrate children, allowing families to spend quality downtime with the smalls without sacrificing service or style. The launch of Mr& Mrs Smith’s new spin-off Smith & Family website in 2013 responds to this mushrooming market, curating the most innovative child-friendly getaways from city to coast and country.

9: China calling
Last year we flagged the trend for travel to China’s less visited cities. In 2013, we anticipate a growing wave of affluent Chinese travellers heading the other way, backed by the booming domestic economy and drawn by European glamour, Australian nature and the coastal cool of Asian neighbours Vietnam, Thailand and the Maldives (with a little hot shopping on the side). From congee-toting Asian breakfasts at hotels to Mandarin-speaking staff and Chinese signage, sussed stays will be meeting the needs of this new generation of independent globetrotters.

10: Hot spots
While last year’s emerging hot spots are gaining momentum (think Sri Lanka, Luang Prabang and Tasmania), in 2013 we predict Burma will be the big mover, as this mysterious, long-isolated south-east Asian nation emerges blinking onto the world stage. Also in Asia, Bangkok is back, baby, thanks to a fistful of fresh, design-led hotels, and coastal Vietnam goes luxe, too, in a bid to become ‘the new Thailand.’ Rio de Janeiro and Marseilles-Provence will benefit from upcoming sporting and cultural events; Dubai from new global airline partnerships (booming low-cost airlines in the Asia-Pacific, including Jetstar, Scoot, Tiger and Peach, will also fuel regional travel lust). Less obvious European cities, such as Istanbul, will pique our curiosity. Over in the Americas, we’ll be wowed by southern States cuisine and Costa Rican nature. See Smith’s Top 10 Travel Hot Spots for details.

And one for laughs…
As a cheeky response to austere global times, expect to see more hotels bringing the fun, from quirky staff uniforms to unusual features such as pinball machines in bedrooms, screening rooms, DIY Martini kits, cigar bars, pet treats, glam guest bikes and scooters for hire.

How An Executive Head Hunter Found Her Husband

shadow handshake

When Iris Levenberg found herself divorced and living in South Florida in her 50s, the executive head hunter-turned-life coach was determined to find a life partner.

"I was on a mission," recalls Iris, now 61. "I spent years as a head hunter, and that's how I look at life: You're constantly searching for talent. I knew what I was looking for. So I went online and put myself out there. You can't expect things to land in your lap."

Meanwhile, Dennis Bailen was licking his wounds in the Chicago area after two divorces and 10 years of trying to find companionship online.

"Online dating is exhausting," says Dennis, 64. "It becomes a full-time job. And there were so many disappointments. I went on and off those dating sites because I hadn't found someone who really met my expectations. But I got tired of being alone on weekends, so I went back on JDate (an online dating site for Jewish singles)."

Iris immediately spotted Dennis online and viewed his profile not once, but twice.

"You notice when people view your profile," Dennis says. "But she lived in Florida, so that wasn't realistic since I was in Chicago."

A dialogue began a couple of days after that second viewing, regardless of distance.

"We got on the phone May 13 (2005), and we had a very easy conversation," Dennis recalls. "At the end of it, Iris said, 'This didn't seem like an interview at all!' After dating for 10 years I learned not to have expectations, so I was really happy it went so well."

Iris had family in the Chicago area, and a date was set for them to meet Memorial Day weekend so Dennis could show her around the city.

"I didn't know this at the time, but she had set up multiple dates when she came to town," Dennis says.

"And a job interview," Iris admits. "I wanted the trip to be worthwhile."

Dennis went to pick Iris up at Union Station, and his timing was perfect.

"Literally, I was pulling up to the entrance of Union Station, and she comes up the steps," he says.

"And you were listening to Joe Jackson music, and I remember thinking, 'Good taste in music.'" Iris adds. "He looked like his picture; I liked the way he dressed. I was relieved."

Their stroll along Michigan Avenue was a success, which led to a second date at Arlington Park race track the following day.

"We put $2 bets on every race," Dennis says. "We don't know horse racing; we bet colors, middle names. And we collected on every single race!"

"Dennis saw this as a sign, and I got freaked out because this was happening so fast," Iris says. "I'd just met him. And I still had four dates lined up."

Two days later, they planned to meet for dinner after Iris' job interview.

"I had canceled a couple of my dates. Not all of them," Iris says, much to Dennis' amusement. "And I was sitting on a chair talking to Dennis after my interview, and just talking to him was so easy -- I decided to cancel my last two dates."

Later that night at the restaurant, they shared their first kiss.

"I leaned over to kiss you while you were sitting at the table, and it was a 'wow' kiss, babe, it really was," Iris recalls, putting her hand on Dennis' arm. "That was like a melding kiss. And I was done."

After spending most of Iris' 10-day visit together, a bond was forming fast.

"Dennis said, 'I want you to be here,' but I thought I needed space. I needed to go back to Florida and clear my head," she says. "He gave me a shirt of his, and I went to Florida and I slept in that shirt every night, and we talked on the phone constantly. ... I lasted nine days. Dennis flew me back. I could not be without him."

They dated that whole summer of 2005. By fall, they talked about moving Iris to Chicago permanently, but she was "not moving to be somebody's girlfriend."

"I said to him early on, 'I'm old-fashioned, I want to remarry, and if that's not on your radar, tell me now,'" Iris recalls.

"I had given up on marriage," Dennis says. "I got burned. I was very devastated by my last divorce, so I wasn't sure I wanted to go back into that water again. But Iris and I were really connecting, so I was willing to consider being married again."

They were engaged in December 2005 and had a small wedding 13 months later, Jan. 18, 2007, at Temple Beth-El in Northbrook.

"I found this perfect winter-white suit on sale for 30 bucks, which I figured was a good sign," she says. "I carried four white roses for our parents who could not be there. It was very intimate."

They bought a home in Libertyville and started building a life together. Iris became certified as a life coach, and Dennis ran a residential building company. But their newly wedded bliss was soon interrupted by the financial crisis in 2009, followed by the loss of Iris' mom and health problems with Dennis' family.

"Then Denny's business crumbled, our house was robbed, and I slipped into a depression," recalls Iris. "Meantime, I'm running a workshop on embracing change as a life coach, while our life was in turmoil. It was a horrible time. We had to rebuild our marriage."

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger," Dennis adds.

Their deep commitment to each other, mixed in with some therapy and new work opportunities, helped them see the light at the end of the tunnel.

"I've been in a helping profession my whole life," Iris says. "Before I was an executive coach, I was a social worker ... and I knew what to say to people. But I really dug in deep and started walking my talk this time, and it took me a while. I was always about seizing the moment and taking chances, and then when 2009 hit, fear took over me. That's something that I'm learning to manage."

"We are old enough and have lived through enough to know that life isn't always going to be as easy as you wish it could be," Dennis says. "But we know that we are better together than we are apart. We both said, 'You are the last spouse that I am going to have.'"

"We are going to grow old together. I've never felt the unconditional love that I know I have from Dennis," says Iris, wiping away tears, before adding with a laugh, "I mean, who else would put up with me?"

jweigel@tribune.com

Twitter: @jenweigel

Love lesson: Iris follows three steps in love and in life: intention, attention and no tension. "I believe you have to have the intention, and then I believe you have to take action and pay attention, and then at some point you have to embrace 'no tension' and let go of whatever the outcome is going to be." ___

Orson Welles Drunk Outtakes for Paul Masson Wine Commercial

Here’s outtakes of Orson Welles, director of Citizen Kane, drunk as he films a commercial for Paul Masson Wine (watch it on YouTube here).

The Paul Masson brand is best remembered for its 1970s marketing association with Orson Welles, who promised for Masson: “We will sell no wine before its time.” The infamous outtakes for one commercial from the Orson Welles campaign features Welles attempting to deliver his lines while very severely inebriated. Despite a lucrative contract which included a clause allowing for generous quantities of free wine, Welles was subsequently sacked from the Paul Masson commercials in the early 1980s after admitting on a US talk show that he never drank Paul Masson wine.

Model Gisele Bundchen and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s $20 million California dream home is finally finished, as photographs surface showing the amazing property following completion. Located in elite Brentwood outside Los Angeles, the mansion is 22,000-square feet and features eight bedrooms, a six-car garage, a lagoon-shaped swimming pool with spa, a weight room for Tom to train in and a wine cellar. It is believed that Gisele and Tom have now moved in to the mansion along with their two-year-old son Benjamin.

The roofs appear to be covered in solar panels and Gisele has insisted that despite its size, the palace is “environmentally friendly.” The couple bought the 3.75-acre lot for $11 million in 2008 and spent millions on the construction. Their neighbors include Arnold Schwarzenegger and Heidi Klum and her singer husband Seal.

Tom and his New England Patriots won the AFC Championship on Sunday (beating the Baltimore Ravens) and they’re on their way to Super Bowl XLVI.

Tadao Cern, a Lithuanian-based photographer and architect, digitally recreated Vincent Van Gogh’s famous self-portrait as a modern photograph. The results are striking, gone are the impressionist brushstrokes — replaced instead with a stark reality, which Cern describes as ‘revealing the truth.’

“This image is a digital recreation of the artist’s most iconic self-portraits using photography and digital retouching. The video is a comparison of a painting and my image,” the artist states. Here’s the finished result from Cern:

10 Things Guys Shouldn't Wear This Winter

$

men's color jeans

Winter is calling. And, just as temps are tipping south, it's easy to let your style slip into hibernation.

We’re here to snap you out of sleep mode to avoid this season’s biggest blunders (hint: oversize sweaters and pom-pom hats have to go).

Ski Jackets with Work Attire

You wouldn’t sport a swimsuit to the office, so why suit up in something meant for the slopes? Investing in a well-tailored wool car coat (not the '80s shoulder-padded kind) is yet another way to separate the men from the boys in the boardroom.

Oversized Sweaters

Perhaps winter’s worst wardrobe offense. From Fair Isle cardigans to cable-knit crewnecks, fitted is always best—even if you’re lugging around some seasonal poundage.

Pom Pom Hats

Pom-poms are fine for cheerleaders, 8-year-olds and hipsters. For everyone else, we suggest a simple beanie, fedora or newsboy.
