It's only appropriate that in July, the month host to Independence Day, we reflect on the things that matter most to us as Americans.
Specifically we're referring to freedom.
And even more specifically, the freedom to fly to an island and fill up on seafood.
If you find yourself chillin' on Martha's Vineyard this summer and are wondering what to eat (especially when it comes to midnight donut cravings), we've got a few suggestions.
Here are the 14 best foods to eat on Martha's Vineyard:
Hot buttered lobster roll & stuffed Quahogs
What may be the lowest-priced lobster roll on Martha's Vineyard ($12.50) is also our personal favorite — you can find it at Larsen's Fish Market at the Menemsha Inn.
Lobster eggs benedict
Yes, it's a decadent breakfast, but you're already on Martha's Vineyard so who's to judge? It can be found at both the Water House Restaurant at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown and the Art Cliff Diner in Vineyard Haven.
Chocolate onion rings
Chocolate and onion, who knew? Four large rings are more than enough as a sweet snack for the brave of tastebuds. Try them at the Quarterdeck, Edgartown
FREE BACON
At The Atlantic in Edgartown, drink at the bar and enjoy unlimited strips of crispy bacon as a bar snack. It's a no-brainer.
Lobster salad roll
A perfect lobster salad roll should have to be eaten with a knife and fork before picking it up can even be attempted. We went to Among the Flowers in Edgartown.
Deep-fried corn dog
The servers at The Quarterdeck in Edgartown weren't kidding when they warned us this corn dog would be "different." It's not the prettiest lunch, but it is incredibly delicious.
Lobster fritters
Skip the hush puppies and spend a few dollars more ($7 for 3) on the lobster fritters at The Quarterdeck in Edgartown.
Fresh baked apple fritter
$5 and a late-night craving for something sweet is all you need. From 7:30pm to 1am, the back door of the MV Gourmet Bakery opens up to serve fresh and hot apple fritters (the size of your head) for $4 each, cake donuts for $1 each, and plenty other goodies. (Back Door Donuts, Oak Bluffs)
Offshore Ale
There's one brewing company on Martha's Vineyard, and this is it. Their Oak Bluffs restaurant offers brewery tours and tastings, but you can always pick up varieties like the Hop Goddess, East Chop Lighthouse, or Menemsha Creek Pale Ale in bottles and on tap around the island. Try the Town Provision Company in Edgartown.
Cherrystone and Littleneck clams
The going price for these local clams is $1 each. Need any further convincing? Didn't think so. Throw in another hot buttered lobster roll while you're at it. (The Net Result, Vineyard Haven)
Martha's Vineyard chocolate bars
Perhaps most ideal as gift item, these locally-produced bars are pricey ($7-ish), but preppy-pretty and ready to return home with you as an edible souvenir. The flavors are also delicious - the Oak Bar, for example, is "smooth dark chocolate topped with caramelized pistachios and a pinch of sea salt." (Juliska, Vineyard Haven)
Good (Intelligentsia) coffee
There may be any number of places to find good coffee on Martha's Vineyard, but this teensy-weensy nook pours the great stuff, Intelligentsia from Chicago. (Behind the Bookstore Cafe, Edgartown)
The "Party Donut"
The most sprinkles you've ever seen on a donut can be found at the Black Dog Bakery. They have several locations but this one is from the Vineyard Haven harbor store.
Doggy donuts (and pretzels)
[not for humans] Speaking of donuts, it's not fair for your furry friend to have to miss out on the scrumptiousness. At Black Dog Bakery, there's a separate counter just serving dog treats.
Happy Fourth of July!
